Artist Statement

As a botanical artist working in watercolour and ink, my practice is rooted in realism, detail, and deep reverence for the natural world. Each piece is a study of form, colour, and intricacy, capturing the quiet strength and subtle beauty of plants and flowers. My work is inspired not only by nature’s aesthetic, but by its profound ability to heal—a truth I came to understand more deeply during my own journey through cancer.

In the process of recovery, both creating art and spending time in nature became powerful forms of therapy. Through my paintings,

I aim to share that sense of calm, connection, and resilience. Every leaf, petal, and stem is rendered with care, inviting viewers to slow down, observe, and rediscover the quiet wonder of the living world. Ultimately, my art is both a celebration of life and a testament to the restorative power of creativity and nature.

Bio

Isel is a botanical artist, writer, and former neuroscientist whose work explores the intersection of nature, observation, and the healing power of visual detail. Trained at Cumbria College of Art & Design, she first gained recognition for her highly detailed watercolour and ink paintings that celebrate the quiet beauty of the natural world.

With a scientific background in neural plasticity and perception, Isel brings a unique sensitivity to the visual patterns found in plants and ecosystems. Her art reflects a deep understanding of how the brain engages with complexity, symmetry, and repetition—patterns that are not only visually compelling but also soothing to the nervous system.

After two decades in neuroscience, she returned to art full-time, combining her love of nature with a deep commitment to presence and attentiveness. Isel lives in Cumbria with her family and animal companions, drawing constant inspiration from the surrounding landscapes.
